Trees and Wildflower Consultation

Your Weston Under Wetherley Parish Council are seeking your comments and input into how we adapt to Climate Change across the village and improve the management of our green spaces.

Contact details for this consultation are at the end of this page.

Your Parish Council has applied for grant funding from Warwickshire County Council’s Green Shoots Community Climate Change Fund 2021. The fund aims to increase our resilience to Climate Change, reduce the climate change impact and fund projects that benefit the Warwickshire community.

We have submitted grant applications for two projects:

  • Green Shoots of 2021: A tree planting scheme for Weston Under Wetherley supporting new tree planting around the village.
  • A new Community Orchard for fruit trees and wildflower planting.

Tree Planting

Subject to successful grant application we will be able to fund the planting of 21 new trees around the Village. The Parish Council are consulting with Warwick District Council and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust to select the appropriate tree varieties and eventually to confirm planting locations.

Any tree planting will be sensitive to road layout, existing homes and the activities using the green space.

We’ve identified some areas for tree planting including:

  • space for six trees on the Sabin Drive playing field.
  • space for a some trees near the memorial bench in St. Michael’s Close.
  • space near the bus stop provided planting is close to the hedge.

Do you have any suggestions for where tree planting could be considered and which tree species should be planted?

The area around the planted trees will be not be mowed and will be planted with wild flower varieties.

Community Orchard and Wildflower Planting

Weston has thriving fruit trees planted north of the Village Hall and on the open space at the bottom of Sabin Drive adjacent to the T-junction with Alderman Way.

Subject to successful grant application, the Parish Council propose to plant a new community orchard on the green space at the top of Sabin Drive between The Barn and Wedgewood Cottage.

WDC owned land off Rugby Road currently mowed – possible location for another community orchard

We propose to restrict WDC mowing to land in front of the barn thereby leaving the community orchard area to be planted with wildflowers. A pathway will be mowed by us through the area to provide for access to fruit trees. This will reduce the amount of mowing in this area of Weston further reducing our carbon footprint.

Protecting our Community Orchards

Warwick District Council’s contractors id Verde are responsible for grass mowing the verges and open spaces in Weston Under Wetherley. Unfortunately, they regularly damage tree stock while using metal bladed grass trimmers. The latest damage reported in the last few weeks will likely happen again.

The Parish Council propose to stop WDC mowing orchard areas and to introduce more wildflower planting around tree stock. The Parish Council will decide upon wildflower funding at the next Parish Council meeting.

1. Where you think tree planting should be considered?
2. What species of trees should be planted?
3. Are you in favour of another community orchard?
4. Which fruit trees should be planted?
5. Would you be able to volunteer and help with planting?
6. What other actions should the Village consider to help reduce our Climate Change impact?

To offer your views and comments, please email Jane Chatterton our Clerk and RFO via email at [email protected]. You can also contact any of our Parish Councillors directly via this page.

Please let us have your comments before the next Parish Council meeting of Tuesday 7th September 2021.

Parish Councillors refresh our Bus Shelter

Weston Under Wetherley Parish Councillors Mandy Bradshaw and Danielle Williams have brought a new lease of life to the Bus shelter on Rugby Road. Further to Nick Harrington replacing a smashed rear plank a few months ago, the Bus Shelter has now had a new lick of paint, hedge pruning and a general tidy up.

Broken beer bottles that didn’t make it into the bin have been collected and overgrown ivy removed.

The Parish Council are doing our upmost to ensure the village assets are maintained and looked after to enhance the appearance in the village. There is a long list of improvements coming your way, keep a lookout for your Parish Council volunteering across our village.
